How to Sanitize Bottles

Let’s take a look at how to sanitize Bottles.

We will be looking at how to sanitize bottles made from various materials including glass, plastic as well as baby bottles.

5 Best Ways to Sanitize Glass Bottles

While I was searching on internet I found three different effective ways to sanitize glass bottles.

These methods are used by people can food such as dams pickles and chutneys.

So let’s get started…

# 1 Sanitise Glass bottles and Jars in the Microwave

Place the glass bottles in the microwave.

Heera few things you need to do before you place them in the microwave. what’s the time with hot soapy water rinse thoroughly.

Ensure that the glass jars and mason jars have water droplets on the outer surface and in the inner surface.

If they are placed without any moisture they will have a tendency to crack.

You need to microwave on high for 60 seconds.

#2 Sanitize using the Oven

The next method is using the oven.

Wash the glass jars with hot soapy water.

Place them dripping in the oven on a baking tray.

The jars will be sterilized in 15 minutes. The oven temperature should be 160 Deg C.

#3 Dishwasher

Here is how you wash glass bottles and jars with no oven or microwave.

Wash the jars in the dishwasher. Run them on sanitize cycle to Sterilise them.

As per National Center for home preservatives this method is not effective in sterilizing the jars.

#4 Sanitize by Boiling on Stove Top

In this method of sterilization, you use the stove top.

I have found people do this two ways.

Method 1 – Steam

This method is by using steam.

Method 2 – Hot Water

In method 2 we fill the pot with water and bring it to a boil.

The jars are totally submerged in the water.

In both the methods place a rack in the bottom of the pot.

Place the jars right side up.

Pour hot water into the pot.

Bring water to a boil for 10 to 15 minutes.

In the steam method the water is just filled a few inches in the pan. We are creating steam.

Steam is an effective sterilization method.

In method 2, the bottles are submerged completely.

Method 2 will take longer and you have to be sure that the water comes to a boil. Once water starts boiling you need to let it boil for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

#5 Pressure Cooker

I like this method because it is easier for me. I own a pressure cooker and know how this works.

In this method it’s best to place a small plate or trivet ( which comes with most pressure cookers) at the bottom of the cooker.

Place jars with lids on lightly closed facing upwards.

Pour in water around and inch or two.

Place on high flame and it should take a few minutes for steam to build up.

After you hear the whistle, turn off the stove.

Release the steam.

Plastic Bottles and Baby Bottles

Ensure that the bottles are BPA free. Also if are using the microwave then make sure they are microwave safe.

I have found that wikihow has explained the entire process very well.

They have listed 4 ways.

How often do you need to Sterilise Baby Bottles?

Baby bottles need to be sterilized after every use.

For our kids we either used the microwave to Sterilise or dropped them in a pot of boiling water.

How to Sanitize bottles on the go?

There are many occasions we might need to sterilize bottles on the go.

Here are some options to sterilise either while camping, travelling, staying at hotels or on a plane.

Sterilization Tablets

These are single use tablets. One per bottle to be sterilized.

This is an easy method to sterilize bottles especially baby bottles on the go.

Amazon India
Amazon USA and Worldwide

This method I found to be very quick and effective and I really like the concept of having some sterilisation tablets always on hand.

Using sterilization tablets is very easy especially when you are travelling by plane or by the train.

The problem with this method is that you need to make sure that the bottles are clean.

It is tough on trains and plane to leave baby and clean the bottle.

Parents prefer to use disposable baby bottles or bottle liners in such situations.

You can use one tablet for one bottle only.

Camping

When you are out camping you might find it much handy to simply have a pot of boiling water.

Drop the washed bottles into the boiling water. Let it boil for another 5 minutes.

They are sterilized and ready to be used.

Another method works well when you are staying at a hotel.

Most hotels come with the microwave.

You can use the microwave technique to sterilize bottles.

if your hotel room has an electric kettle, you can use that to boil some water.

Pour the boiling water on the bottle especially the rim.

Leave it for few minutes and they should sterilise the bottles.
